ENTERTAINMENT & LEISURE

During the time period of the 1920's sports were massively popular with the public, especially the famous baseball player, Babe Ruth.

George Herman Ruth Jr. was born on February 6, 1895 in Baltimore, Maryland. Having little parental guidance when he was younger, he often got into trouble and sometimes skipped school. At St. Mary’s Industrial School for Boys, George jr. found his love for the game of baseball.Working tirelessly on his baseball skills, George Jr. became so good that Jack Dunn, owner of the Baltimore Orioles, was invited to come watch Ruth play. Dunn was obviously impressed, as he offered a contract to George Jr. in February 1914 after watching him play for less than an hour. He was considered "Jack's newest babe", therefore getting the most famous nickname in sports history, Babe Ruth.

He later became a permanent fixture in the Red Sox rotation in 1915 the year 1919 being his last season with Boston before Babe was sold to the New York Yankees. The two teams would never be the same again. Ruth held an astonishing 56 major league records at the time, including the most revered record in baseball: 714 homeruns. On June 13, 1948, his jersey number “3” was retired by the Yankees during his last appearance at Yankee Stadium. Babe lost his battle with cancer on August 16, 1948.
